On Saturday, March 2, the Visual Communication Design Program hosted its first workshop in the Design Briefs Workshop series in partnership with Collage Philadelphia, a community for collage artists. Cut & Create was led by Collage Philadelphia’s founder and Jefferson VCD alum, Jacob Dombroksi.
Despite the cold rain, artists from across the city joined us in the Visual Communication Design studios in Hayward Hall. Attendees included faculty, prospective and current students, alumni, and Philadelphia-based creatives. The workshop began with a brief presentation from Dombroski about the history of collage through which attendees learned more about the art of image making and storytelling through the medium. Soon, attendees were sent on their own collage journey, wading through stacks of magazines, books, and other materials in order to create their own unique work.
Throughout the process of creating their work, attendees were able to share materials, ask one another for feedback, and above all, connect through the art of collage. Several attendees created multiple collage works, and as the workshop neared its end, all of the attendees lamented how quickly the afternoon had passed and how they would like to continue to work on their pieces. Each collage created used vastly different imagery, creating a large, diverse body of work as the attendees pinned their collages to the wall for display to one another.
The Visual Communication Design program was delighted to host all of the creatives in attendance and we cannot wait for the remaining three Design Briefs Workshops this spring!
