Textile Design visits Dock Mennonite Academy

Weave technician and assistant professor Regina Burkholder recently returned to her high school alma mater, Dock Mennonite Academy, to share insights into Textile Design at Thomas Jefferson University.

During her visit to Dock, Regina provided students with an overview of Textile Design, how designers translate their ideas from inspiration to end use, and shared examples of current student work. Students at Dock were introduced to the diverse facets of textile creation, including print, knit, and woven textiles. Regina showcased examples of current student work, offering a glimpse into the boundless possibilities within the field.

Drawing from her own experiences as both a student in the Textile Design program and a professional in the textile industry, Regina offered insights into the creative journey and practical applications of textile design. Regina’s journey into the world of textile design traces back to her high school days at Dock in her Fabric, Fashion, and the Future class. Under the guidance of her teacher, Mrs. Janine Musselman, Regina’s class embarked on a visit to The Design Center’s Textile and Costume Collection. This excursion proved to be a pivotal moment for Regina, igniting her passion for textile design and motivating her to pursue studies in the field.

The students and current teacher of Fabric, Fashion, and the Future, Mrs. Rose Lambright were eager to get a chance to make a woven textile. Using small handheld looms and large wooden needles, Regina demonstrated the fundamentals of warp and weft yarns and guided students to create their own textile designs.

Through interactive demonstrations and engaging discussions, Regina’s visit not only inspired the next generation of textile designers but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship inherent in textile design.
