The students of Textile Design were honored this semester with a competition sponsored by Donegal Yarns Ltd, a historic mill in County Donegal, Ireland. Donegal Yarns sent the department a generous selection of luxury yarns and the stipulation to make something beautiful with them.
The parameters of the competition were that the entries be a constructed textile that includes up to 50% other natural fibers and consider sustainability in the construction and end-use. Any construction was allowed. The final makeup of entries included knitting, weaving, and crochet. Students were allowed to create a new mood board for inspiration or incorporate a current mood board being used for a studio course.
Besides the enjoyment that comes from using such lovely yarns, the competitors are motivated by the chance to win the grand prize. That prize is a paid internship at Donegal Yarns mill plus accommodations for four weeks! What an incredible opportunity! We are in deep gratitude to our industry partners for providing our students with such amazing real-world experiences.
We will have a virtual awards ceremony once the entries are judged by the good people of Donegal Yarns. Keep watching this space for an announcement of the winners!
