When coming up with a concept, I always like to find a way to learn more about my culture through my research. I began researching black women in America and found beautiful stories that showed expression through hair. Black women’s hairstyles are a powerful form of self-expression and creativity that has changed over the years. Through my capstone project, my goal was to bring beautiful hair textures to life. The aim was to honor the historical and cultural significance of Black women’s hair, which has long been a symbol of strength, individuality, and resistance.
Strands of Empowerment is inspired by black women’s hair from the 1960s to the present. It is a trans-seasonal apparel collection highlighting beauty and expression through eye-catching styled garments. The collection will be shown through various prints. Throughout my research, I began to look at different trends during each of the 6 decades. I started to learn about each decade’s unique characteristics. Each decade has unique characteristics that create a cohesive collection. The techniques used throughout my print designs include screen printing with foiling to capture the beautiful jewelry and embellishments that compliment our hair. Watercolor dyes show the unique expression of the gorgeous hair textures through motif making. Ned graphics software has helped me to develop my print designs further digitally. Conveying a lovely story of the importance of black women expressing themselves through their hairstyles. “Strands of Empowerment” strives to inspire others to embrace the beauty of self-expression through hair and honor its cultural significance. This collection tells a story of how black women express themselves with their beautiful hair.
